Colours:

As you are aware, there is a general lack of consistency in the colours used by Rose. This extends cross-brand and across channnels and suppliers within individual brands.

As selecting a colour pallet is fundamanetal to developing the Rose brand assets and guidelines,  to give a complete picture I have set out the legacy colours and colours in use before putting forward the colour theory adopted for a set of recomendations for brand colour pallets.

Objectives:

  1. Decide upon the primary colours for each brand
  2. Based on the selected primary, develop a set of supporting/accent colours for each brand.
  3. In support of the selected primary and accent colours for each brand, develop a set of core colours that can be used across all brands.
  4. Ensure that there is a synergy across all colours
  5. Ensure all colours are fully defined so that they can be used across RGB, CYMK and spot-colour printing processes and online.

The current colour pallet is quite large with quite a few shades of green. The pallet could be rationalised by considering either:

  1. Using Recycling & Skip Hire – Green and Pattrick & Thompsons – Green as the two shades of green for the Rosey Lee logo; or
  2. If you want to retain a unique shade of green for Landscaping (which is the same colour as the colour currently assigned to Rosey Lee – Dark), use the Pattrick & Thompsons – Green as the lighter shade in the Rosey Lee logo

The Recycling & Skip Hire and Supporting Colours pallets shown below were developed using the Adobe Colour Wheel combining analogous and shade colour theories.

Using the primary colours specified by Lowman Miller Associates and XXX as a baseline, this approach was adopted for the Aggregates and Pattrick & Thompsons and pallets shown below.

The Building Supplies pallet combines the Lowman Miller Associates primary blue and Cocktail Marketing pallet developed for the Andrews brand which has adopted a similar approach to colour theory and sits quite comfortably alongside the other brand pallets.

These are the colours used on the Recycling & Skip Hire website which include the new Priamry colour and accent colours.

Secondary Fonts:

Background

The purpose of a secondary font is to support a brand’s visual identity and help set the overall tone/tone of voice.

Not only is selecting a font important, but it is also essential to develop a house style that can be applied across various use-cases: messaging, straplines, headings, copy, instructions, supporting information, etc. For each use-case, a style should include font-subset, font-weight, letter-spacing, line height, etc.

Very little of this was delivered by Brave Creative and failed to even specify the type foundry, the font-family or font-subsets to be used. This is important as many type foundries have published DIN fonts. Each subtly differs, with many including multiple font-subsets and font-weights within each subset.

As a result, print agencies commissioned by Rose have used DIN fonts from various type foundries and appear to have adopted their own interpretation of styling which has led to inconsistencies across your marketing materials.

Objectives:

  • Establish font selection criterion
  • Present font options
  • Compare selected fonts with sample house styles across various use-cases and scenarios. 
  • Select secondary font and approach for house style

Font Selection Criterion

The objective was to find a DIN font-set that met the following criteria:

  • Provides various font-subsets and font-weights within each subset that allow flexibility in the design of the Rose font-pallet.
  • Can be used across all channels – print, signage, banner and poster designs for use across social media, advertising, etc. and importantly the web.
  • Be reasonably close to DIN fonts currently in use to avoid a jarring transition from existing artwork to the new designs during the transition period.
  • Provides a font-subset/font-weight that is closely approximated within Microsoft Office default fonts so it can be used for emails, reports, invoices etc. and not look too dissimilar.*
  • Be commercially available for use across all channels from a trusted publishing house.

* Note: custom fonts can be installed into MS Office, however, this would them to be installed on a company wide basis and licensing would likely be expensive.

Selected font: urw DIN

After experimenting with numerous fonts, URW DIN from the URW Type Foundry, published by Adobe was chosen.

There are multiple font-subspets and font-weights with the collection and they can be viewed at: Adobe Fonts / URW-DIN (This page is quite useful as it lets you play around with the fonts and put in your own text).

This section further defines the intial font selection taking into consideration use-cases to present house style options.

Tone of Voice

As discussed, tone of voice is an important part of brand identity. The convention adopted on the Recycling and Skip Hire website for heading, titles, straplines, key messaging etc. has been applied.

  • Headings and titles: uppercase – providing an assertive stop, look, pay attention tone.
  • Straplines and key messaging: lowercase – providing a more friendly, softly spoken tone.

In my opinion, this approach works well and should be adopted across all channels and included in design specifications.
